Portugal Gets First Canned Fish Vending Machine

Portuguese canned food gourmet shop Loja das Conservas (House of Canned Goods) has launched a canned fish vending machine, the first of its kind in the world.

Its aim is to provide a healthy and cheap alternative to meals and snacks in business environments with over 300 employees.

The machine has been installed at the first of two Lisbon stores of Loja das Conservas, which opened in 2013. The store's aim is to to promote and market over 300 types of canned fish from 18 Portuguese canning companies, which together comprise the National Association of the Canned Fish Industry (ANICP).

The machine offers products that range from traditional tuna and sardines (prepared in different ways) to other flavours such as cod, mackerel, stuffed squid, mussels and eel, as well as a variety of sandwiches (in partnership with 'Pão do Rogil'). It also issues silverware and napkins. Prices range from €1 to €3.

Besides expanding in Portugal, Loja das Conservas has already established a foothold in Europe, opening corner shops in Paris (located inside the delicatessen 'Causses'), Vienna and Warsaw.
