Portugal's Coffee Market Boosted By Capsule Growth

The coffee market in Portugal grew by 3.1% in 2017, compared to the previous year, to be valued at €500 million.

The figures come from a sector study published by Informa D&B, the main results of which were published by Jornal de Negocios.

According to the study, the consumption and production of coffee in Portugal has increased since 2014, with the recovery of the market after a period of stagnation, driven by the economic situation in the country.

Coffee exports stood at €66 million last year, representing a growth of 1.5%, while imports amounted to €116 million (-0.9%). Spain is the main recipient of Portuguese exports, accounting for 35% of total exports.

Portuguese coffee production was worth €450 million last year, an increase of 3.9%.

Sector Profile

The Portuguese coffee sector comprises about 70 coffee companies, most of them small in size, with more than four fifths boasting fewer than 20 employees.

The market was boosted by the performance of the capsule coffee market, a segment that has grown by 12% in each of the past two years, according to Nielsen data, making it one of the fastest growing categories in the FMCG segment.

Meanwhile, a separate study by Marktest TGI claims that five million Portuguese consumed coffee in capsules at home in the last 12 months, a figure that represents 58.8% of Portuguese consumers aged 15 years and over.

Thos figure differs among the various age groups, from 46.8% among those aged 65 years and over to 67.5% in the 35-44 age group.

Consumption of coffee capsules at home is more prevalent in the Greater Lisbon area (67.1% of consumers).
