Price Of UK Groceries 40% Cheaper Than A Year Ago - MySupermarket

Popular supermarket items have dropped in price by as much as 40 per cent compared with a year ago in the UK, according to mySupermarket.

Research conducted by the shopping and comparison website also revealed the cost of a basket of 35 popular products has dropped in price again – costing £82.78 in April.

In April 2015 the same basket cost £86.69.

It is another lowest price record since the mySupermarket Groceries Tracker was launched in December 2014.

The price drop follows on from the news that Sainsbury’s plans to drop its Brand Match scheme in lieu of cheaper overall prices while Tesco has said it is ceasing its Clubcard Boost promotions.

Broccoli was 39 per cent cheaper in April 2016 compared with April 2015, along with onions - down by 18 per cent, bananas were 15 per cent cheaper and fresh peppers had a 16 per cent price drop.

Prices are also down from the month before with onions 12 per cent cheaper than in March 2016, fresh peppers down per cent and both broccoli and deli bacon and ham 6 per cent cheaper.

The only product to rise higher than a few percentage points compared with March was baked beans, which were up by 4 per cent.

Overall, shoppers are now 4.5 per cent better off than they were a year ago – a significant figure according to mySupermarket’s managing director Kim Ludlow.

“Every little bit certainly counts and any percentage drop can add up over time, meaning families can have more cash towards holidays or other treats,” she said.

"While prices have dropped overall, there are several items that have risen since last year or even last month.”

She said the supermarket price war continued to keep prices competitive across retailers.

“We’re also seeing supermarkets committing to slashing prices on own brand or everyday items,” she said.
