Albert Heijn Extends Its Vegetarian Range

Dutch retailer Albert Heijn has extended its range of (pre-cut) vegetables and meat-substitutes, suitable for vegetarians.

The new range includes purple kale, organic pumpkin pieces and vegetable fries - vegetables, such as sweet potato, carrot, parsnip and yellow beet, shaped like fries, to make them more appealing to children.

Meat substitutes include Steamed-Vegetable Burgers, Vegetarian Mince and varieties of Falafel.

The packaging for the pre-cut vegetables has also been re-designed, to suit smaller households. The new packaging features instructions for a variety of preparation methods.

"More and more consumers want to eat 250 grams of vegetables per day, but that is not always easy,"said Marit van Egmond, director of merchandising and sourcing at Albert Heijn.

"To make the choice for healthy eating easier, we are adding many different vegetables and vegetarian products to the shelves, like vegetable fries, fresh falafel dough, organic pumpkin pieces and steamed-vegetable burgers. Since we know that our customers like variation, we provide instructions for up to five different cooking methods on the packaging."
