Carrefour Spain has signed an agreement with Zaragoza egg producer Granja Virgen del Rosario to market private label free-range eggs.
The eggs will be sold as part of Carrefour’s own-brand Quality Line. This range includes eggs which are produced in sustainable conditions in which hens have outdoor access, the freedom to lay their eggs without human intervention, and are fed plant-derived feed – wheat, maize and barley.
A salmonella-control plan is in place, and all animals are free of antibiotics and coccidiostats while their laying season is in session.
All Carrefour retailers in Spain will receive eggs from the Granja Virgen del Rosario farm.
The agreement between the egg producer and the French retailer was created to ‘recognise and promote national products that are committed to recovering foods’ original flavour and that take animal welfare and the environment into account, as well as acknowledging the work of crop and livestock farmers and fishermen who know how to pass on these values from generation to generation,’ according to the supermarket chain.
