Continente Launches New Private-Label Sustainable Chocolates
Portuguese retailer Continente has announced that it has introduced a new range of chocolates made of UTZ-certified sustainable cocoa.
It comprises five flavours - dark chocolate (72%), whole almond dark chocolate, whole almond milk chocolate, whole hazelnut milk chocolate, and whole hazelnut milk chocolate.
The chocolates, priced at €1.59 for 200 grams, were also evaluated for quality by a panel of selected customers, the retailer said.
The product has been rolled out in all Continente stores as well as Continente Modelo and Continente Bom Dia outlets.
Ana Alves, commercial director of private-label at Continente, said, "It is important for Continente brand to offer high-quality products, but affordable to Portuguese families.
"We decided to test the new [range] with our customers, who are the most rigorous evaluators we can have. Only after passing the consumer test do we know that the product will be well received in stores."
The UTZ-certification ensures that cocoa suppliers are trained to grow cocoa beans of better quality and implement sustainable agricultural practices.
"In addition to quality, we have decided to use 100% sustainable UTZ-certified cocoa, which ensures agricultural production and responsible sourcing, without harming the environment or exploiting labor, while respecting fair trade rules," Alves added.
