Portuguese supermarket chain Continente has launched a new product range, Vegegurtes, a new vegan alternative to yoghurts that forms part of the retailer's 'Powered by Plants' offering.
The new, 100% vegetable-based range is fortified with Vitamins B12, D and calcium, with all variants produced in Portugal.
Now on sale at Continente outlets across Portugal, the new Vegegurts are naturally lactose-free, gluten-free, suitable for vegan consumers and are guaranteed by the European Vegetarian Union, the umbrella organisation of vegan and vegetarian associations and societies throughout Europe.
Coconut- And Almond-Based
Both coconut-based and almond-based selections form part of the new private-label range.
The coconut-based Vegegurts are available in three flavours – Natural, Strawberry and Mango Passion Fruit – and are packaged in 2 x 120g formats, priced at €1.39.
The almond-based variety also comes in three flavours – Natural, Red Fruits and Peach Passionfruit – and again are packaged in a 2 x 120g format, which is priced at €1.49.
Suitable for vegans, gluten- and lactose-intolerant people, these vegetable-based yoghurts are also an alternative for those seeking to reduce consumption of animal-based products, the retailer said.
Increased concerns about health and healthy eating, as well as greater environmental awareness and attention to animal welfare, have led to increased demand among Portuguese consumers for innovative and disruptive products targeting vegan, vegetarian and flexitarian diets.
