E.Leclerc Continues To Show Dynamism At Top Of French Grocery Market

French retail market leader E.Leclerc has posted a 60 basis point increase in market share in the most recent four week period, from September 2 to September 29, according to Kantar.

The group, which recently announced plans to open its first stores in Guadeloupe and Martinique, sits on 21.7% market share for the P10 period, Kantar data shows, due to 'strong dynamism in both its E.Leclerc stores and Drive channel.

Discounter Performance

Also performing strongly in the period was discounter Lidl, which holds 5.7% market share, a 40 basis point gain.

According to Kantar, this marks Lidl's 15th consecutive period of market share growth, with the banner now reaching a total of 587,000 households, and seeing its customer loyalty levels improve by 40 basis points.

Les Mousquetaires

Elsewhere, Les Mousquetaires put in a solid performance for the period, with the group holding 15.3% market share, an increase of 30 basis points.

Intermarché, the group's biggest banner, now holds 14% market share, following a 30 basis point increase, with the group benefiting from an increase of 335,000 households, combined with a higher level of customer loyalty.

Système U saw a 20 basis point increase in market share, to 10.7%, with the group acquiring an additional 200,000 households during the P10 period.

Elsewhere, Carrefour's hypermarket network saw a 50 basis point decline to sit on 10.1% market share, with its Carrefour Market operation steady on 7.4% share.

Auchan saw a 20 basis point decline in market share to 7.2% market share.

Géant Casino was down 20 basis points to 2.6% market share, with Leader Price down 40 basis points to 2.1%.

West Indies

On E.Leclerc's venture into the West Indies, the retailer said earlier this month that it was planning to open two hypermarkets in Guadeloupe and five on Martinique, early next year, despite the cost of an average basket being 12.5% higher than in mainland France.

The group previously attempted to enter the region in 2008, but pulled out due to financial difficulties at Groupe Lancry a local affiliate.
