Morrisons' Private-Label Pinotage Wins Illustrious Prize

A Morrisons private-label wine that retails at £6.99 has won a prestigious gold medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards, claiming victory over wines that cost up to ten times what it does, DailyMail.co.uk reports.

The grocer’s M Signature Pinotage, the only entrant of that grape varietal to win a gold medal, was judged superior to even Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage 2012, which costs £65.60 and received a bronze medal in the blind taste-testing.

A spokesperson for the Decanter World Wine Awards remarked, “Each wine is judged individually, so not against each other as such, but it was deemed better than all the others, regardless of price, as it was the only one which won a gold. It [Morrisons’ M Signature Pinotage] won on its own merit.”

Morrisons' wine-sourcing manager, Mark Jarman, said, “We've worked hard to produce a juicy pinotage that typifies the vibrant dark fruit and chocolate characters this South African variety is capable of.

"The fruit is sourced from 20-year-old vines grown in the dry-farmed Swartland region of the [Western] Cape [of South Africa], and we keep oak to a minimum to emphasise the fruity aspect of the grape."
