Müller To Roll Out Lightweight Recyclable Milk Cap

Dairy giant Müller has announced that it will introduce lightweight, recyclable milk caps for all its branded and private-label fresh milk bottles from February 2019.

The new caps, which use 13% less plastic, will remove 300 tonnes of plastic every year, which is equivalent to the weight of 231 million ‘stealth’ milk caps.

'Great Progress'

Patrick Müller, CEO of Müller Milk and Ingredients, said, “We’re clear about the need to reduce our use of plastic, and we have removed 10,000 tonnes of plastic from our milk bottles since 2016. This is great progress, but we can, and we will do more."

The dairy company collaborated with packaging solutions provider Paccor to design, test, and roll out the new compression mould caps.

During the 18-month development and trial phase, Müller successfully tested the new caps in its dairies.

Other Initiatives

The dairy giant is committed to sustainable packaging, and its HDPE (High-density polyethylene) fresh milk bottles, used for all branded and private label fresh milk products, are already 100% recyclable.

“We are convinced that the work we do with our packaging, operational excellence and with dairy farmers who supply us to protect against market volatility, are real points of difference,” Müller added.

It is also aiming to increase the use of recycled plastic in its bottles to 50% by 2020.
