Spar Austria Launches Reduced-Sugar Sweetener

Spar Austria has launched a new reduced-sugar sweetener, Vital Brikenzucker, as part of the company's focus on sugar reduction.

The retailer plans to introduce more own brand products that do not contain added sugar, or that can act as an alternative to sugar.

Alternative Sweetener

This new product is made from wood sugar, which has a similar taste, but 40% fewer calories than traditional sugar.

It is also tooth-friendly and has a low glycemic index, making it a good alternative for diabetics.

Health Initiatives

The Spar Vital range was originally developed 10 years ago, with an aim to create 'healthy products in close cooperation with nutrition experts'.

Earlier this year Spar Austria announced that it is committed to reducing the amount of sugar in its own-brand products, as the daily sugar intake of Austrians is currently four times the amount recommended by the World Health Organisation.
