SPAR Hungary Invests €5.3m To Expand Its Store Network

  • SPAR Hungary has announced that it has invested approximately €5.3 million in four projects involving the expansion of its network in the country.

    The retailer has used the amount to open two new stores in residential areas in Budapest and Sopron and renovate two stores in Mosonmagyaróvár and Szentlőrinc.

    In April of this year, the retailer invested €3.9 million in a new SPAR City store in Budapest and modernised supermarkets in East-Budapest and Eger as part of its ongoing expansion programme.

    The new SPAR Supermarket in the Allure Residence in Budapest features a smaller retail area but offers the same extensive range as the retailer's large-format stores in the country.

    The retailer has invested more than €1.2 million in the store, creating 20 new jobs.

    The outlet offers a wide range of fresh items, a delicatessen counter, and a bakery department, as well as cold and warm to-go products.

    The new supermarket in Sopron, with 29 team members and involving an investment of more than €1.1 million, is located between a residential area and Sopron University in the north-western part of town.

    The store implements SPAR Hungary's latest design concept, featuring an extensive choice of fresh produce and a wide selection of convenience and baked goods.

    Renovated Outlets

    The renovated stores have been upgraded to offer a more expansive range of convenience products, fresh food, and cutting-edge technologies to improve the shopping experience.

    The retailer spent €1.7 million in renovating its store in the town of Mosonmagyaróvár.

    The investment involved upgrading and expanding the fresh food department, including signage to highlight locally sourced products, coolers for convenience products, and an expanded bakery department.

    The retailer replaced all furniture and equipment to create a new store design with in-store transparency.

    SPAR Hungary also installed self-checkouts, energy-saving LED technology, and an eco-friendly heat pump system.

    Elsewhere in Szentlőrinc, the retailer invested €1.3 million in redesigning the in-store layout to enable easy navigation, leaving the store exterior unchanged.

    SPAR Hungary reported a very positive 2020 despite the extraordinary challenges caused by the pandemic, with annual sales reaching €2.10 billion, marking a considerable growth of 8.7% compared to 2019.
