Walmart’s Plan To Be Big In Japan

Walmart will increase its Japanese online grocery operations by 303 stores to 350 by 2013, it has been announced. The US retail chain’s ambitious plans will be carried out under its Japanese supermarket banner, Seiyu. Seiyu has revealed that it will provide online grocery services at 125 of its supermarkets by the end of this year, extending this to 350 outlets by 2013. By adapting this business model, Seiyu hopes to grow its total online customers by ten-fold, and its volume of sales by 20–fold between now and 2016.

The online grocery service is available at 47 of Seiyu’s stores at present, the majority of which are in the very densely populated Kanto region, including the cities of Toyko and Yokohama. The 303 new stores will see the service being introduced to the Hokkaido, Nagano, Tokai, Kansai and Kyushu regions. (2 Feb)
