Waitrose Sales Up 0.9% As Shoppers Opt For Ready Meals

UK retailer Waitrose has announced that its total sales last week had increased by 0.9% compared to the same week last year.

Sales also increased by 9% at the retailer's in-store cafes, with sales of hot food increasing by 24%.

Trends

Waitrose noted a significant increase in sales of ready meals - Chinese dishes were up by 73% and other Asian ready meals experienced an increase of 68%. Meat accompaniments such as gravy were up by 20%.

Last week also saw the retailer celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Waitrose Duchy Organic food brand, which generated annual sales of £200 million last year. The popular private label brand was originally launched by the Prince of Wales to promote organic farming, and entered into a partnership with Waitrose in 2009.
