Portugal's Amanhecer Mini Market Surpasses 200 Stores

Portuguese mini-market network Amanhecer has surpassed 200 franchised stores in continental Portugal and the island of Madeira.

Since the beginning of the year, with an average of two openings per week, Amanhecer opened 67 neighbourhood stores, in addition to the existing 150 at the end of 2014.

Lisbon is the area with the strongest presence, with 40 stores, while 12 new stores were opened in Madeira this year alone.

According to the director of operations of Amanhecer, José Vieira, the main goal of the project is to expand commercial cooperation with small and medium sized independent retailers, by supporting the renewal and modernisation of their traditional shops.

The main emphasis is on remodelling existing spaces, with areas ranging from 100 m2 to 400 m2, although new store openings accounted for 30% of the total this year.

Launched in 2011 by Portuguese cash & carry chain Recheio, the Amanhecer stores offer fresh products and private label products, including MasterChef (advertised as "best food at the best price"); Amanhecer (aimed at small business owners and all consumers) and Gourmês (“high quality” products for restaurants, coffee parlors and hotels).
