Eroski Advances Commitment To Sustainable Fishing

Spanish supermarket chain Eroski has met with representatives of the Spanish tuna sector to discuss an update to an agreement on sustainable tuna fishing practices.

Eroski met with shipowner association ANABAC and fish producer association OPAGAC in Derio, in the Basque Country, at the AZTI Technological Centre of Marine Research and Food.

Industry Compliance

The groups discussed setting new initiatives that are in compliance with conservation measures, as defined by the International Foundation for Sustainable Fisheries.

In 2017, Eroski pledged to source all of its tuna sustainably. According to a company press release, 30% of its total canned tuna purchases are supplied by fisheries that use sustainable fishing equipment. The purpose of the cooperative meeting was to increase this volume of purchases to 40% in the next year.

Eroski was the first retail distribution chain in Spain to pass the Marine Stewardship Council audit and receive certification of its fish products sourced from sustainable fishing areas.
