Auchan Celebrates 50th Birthday Of Its Oldest Store

French retailer Auchan is celebrating the 50th birthday of its oldest store, which was opened in Roncq in the north of France in 1967.

When it first opened, the store featured 6,000 square meters of sales area, 200 employees, and 1,000 parking spaces, which the retailer says was 'very impressive' at the time.

Auchan is celebrating this milestone with festive events, such as food tastings, children's attractions, and a 'Museum of Auchan Roncq', recalling the store's history.

Competitive Store

With four million transactions per year, Auchan Roncq is the top selling supermarket in the northern region and one of the highest in France. It also attracts a large number of Belgian customers (approximately 20%).

Auchan Roncq features a wide range of fresh, organic and local products. In addition, the store is one of the country's biggest sellers of drinks, and each year it organises a wine fair.

As part of Auchan's environmental aims, the store has committed to reduce its electricity consumption by 20% in the next six years, and to sort and recover its waste.

The store also provides recycling facilities for customers, which has seen it recycle three to six tonnes of batteries each year, approximately one tonne of lightbulbs, and more than 800,000 plastic bottles.
