Brazilian Consumers' Association Highlights Cheapest Supermarkets

Brazilian consumers could save up to R$2,800 (€742) per year by choosing the cheapest supermarket, according to national consumer association Proteste.

The association conducted a study, reported in local daily O Estado de São Paulo, that aims to indicate to consumers the cheapest supermarkets in 22 cities in 15 Brazilian states and the Federal District.

The study identified the prices of two baskets of products, classified according to two different consumption profiles. Basket 1 consists of 104 products from the leading brands, while Basket 2 consists of 90 of the cheapest products.

In total, 1,300 points of sale were visited by the group's researchers across the country. In Brazil’s largest city São Paulo, 64 establishments participated in the survey.

According to the survey, in the city of São Paulo, consumers can save up to R$2,392 (€634) per year on Basket 1 if they opt for an Atacadão store, while the annual saving for Basket 2 reaches R$2,819 when shopping at Assaí.

In the 2017 edition of its survey, Proteste observed higher price stability, unlike previous years when the variation exceeded 20%.

The largest price increase for Basket 1 occurred in the state of Ceará, which was 7% more expensive than the average, while the same basket in Rio Grande do Sul was 7.9% cheaper.

For Basket 2, Pernambuco was the state with the highest price increase (+13.7%), while in Maranhão the same basket was 18.3% cheaper.
