Campaign Launched In Italy To Ban Sweet Sales At Checkouts

An Italian NGO that specialises in food-related matters has launched a campaign to ban sweets, chocolates and snacks from supermarket checkouts.

Il Fatto Alimentare has started a petition on Change.org called 'Stop sweets, candy and snacks being sold at supermarket tills'.

The appeal is addressed to the major supermarket chains in Italy: Coop, Conad, Esselunga, Auchan, Carrefour, Simply, Eurospin, Lidl, Il Gigante, Pam, Iper, Billa, Crai, Unes, Selex, Sma, Lombardini Group, MD Market, LD Market, Supersigma and NaturaSì.

So far, most of the retailers have ignored the invitation. Coop has indicated that it is thinking of a solution, while NaturaSì claims that it does not plan to adopt this policy.

The Italian NGO is hoping to repeat the success story from the UK, where Tesco has eliminated sweets and chocolate from its checkouts, including approximately 2,000 small Metro and Express supermarkets.
