Carrefour Expands Spanish Network, Private Label Relaunch

Carrefour is investing in its Spanish operation with store openings and the relaunch of private label ranges planned for 2013. The France-based retailer is to add 100 stores to its Carrefour Express store network, and with the planned addition of five Carrefour Market outlets, according to Europa Press.

The group is utilising franchising for the expansion of its Carrefour Express format, with the recent opening of new stores in the Madrid suburb of Soto del Real, with 42 employees, and Pinares de Murcia, with 16 staff. Carrefour noted its sales increases in the country in the third quarter, despite the difficult economic climate, mostly due to relaxed Sunday opening hours.

The retailer is also to relaunch its Carrefour Baby private label line in the country. The range currently offers 37 baby food products and 21 infant hygiene items, but will expand to include 64 SKUs altogether. Planet Retail cites the move as a probable reaction to growth in the category by Spanish discounter Mercadona, in its infant food, Hacendado, and hygiene, Deliplus, lines. (7 Jan)
