Dutch Value Store Hema To Expand Into UK And Spain

Dutch value retailer Hema has announced plans that it is to expand into new markets, including the UK and Spain over the coming year.

Hema, which will be in direct competition with Poundland and B&M Bargains, says that it will open 2 stores in London this summer with even more stores in and around the British capital planned to open on a later date.

Hema, which sells a wide variety of products including fashion, beauty, home, stationary, food and drink, currently operates over 600 hundred stores in The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and France. In January Hema's CEO Ronald van Zetten revealed plans to expand to Spain and the UK.

"England is a very different market. Opening a store there is more of a gamble," he said.

Just today details of their entry into the Spanish market also emerged. Hema will open their very first store in the Spanish capital in April.
