E.Leclerc Maintains Lead Over Carrefour In French Market: Kantar Worldpanel

E.Leclerc holds a 60-basis-point lead over rival Carrefour in Kantar Worldpanel's latest set of market share figures for France.

According to the data for P11 (a four-week period in October/November), E.Leclerc sits on 20.6% share, with Carrefour on 20.0%.

This time last year, E.Leclerc held a 20.5% share, compared to Carrefour’s 20.3%, while a month ago, E.Leclerc was on 21.1% to Carrefour’s 20.6%.

Carrefour’s hypermarket division holds a 10.5% share, while its supermarket arm sits on 7.0%.

Following Behind

In third place is Intermarché, on 15.8% market share (up from 15.5% for the same period last year), followed by Groupe Casino, on 11.2% (down from 11.5% for this period last year).

Système U sits on 10.7% market share, with Auchan on 10.2%.

Interestingly, Lidl and Aldi remain roughly where they were at this stage last year. The discounters sit on 5.6% and 2.3% market share, respectively, while in the same period last year, they held 5.4% and 2.3%.

According to Kantar Worldpanel, the period was particularly dynamic for the online channel, which was 0.4% higher, while French households spent 0.8% more overall.

Channel Shift

Commenting on the figures, Bruno Monteyne of Bernstein Research said, “The channel shift was different this period. While hypers in France have been steadily declining, this period, they were up by 29 basis points, but that is against a very sharp drop-off last year, when hypermarket share losses dropped from -50 basis points to -130 basis points. Therefore, this year's move is a partial reversal of that.

“The increase in hypers is offset by a drop in convenience (down 25 basis points), supers (-36 basis points) and discounters (-3 basis points). Online continued to gain market share (+35 basis points), in line with the previous period,” added Monteyne.
