ESM Businesswomen of the Year Awards 2010

At this year’s Consumer Goods Forum Global Summit in London, it was hard to ignore the fact that a mere two women made the list of 27 headline speakers. Indeed, during the morning breakout session, only one in four of the speakers were women. This situation is somewhat anomalous however, as females, who form the bulk of the workforce, and provide the vast majority of consumers, dominate the retail industry.

It is with great pleasure, therefore, that ESM has chosen 10 female executives from across the industry to be honoured in the inaugural ESM European Businesswomen of the Year Awards. To be held on October 22 at the Dorchester Hotel in London, the event will be a timely celebration of the increasing influence that women are bringing to bear in the management of Europe’s leading supermarket chains.

“Selecting the winners for this prestigious event has been a truly fascinating process,” said Kevin Kelly, editor of ESM. “We are delighted to be flying the flag for women in the industry, who, by and large, are significantly underrepresented in the higher echelons of the grocery retail trade.

Since early 2010, ESM, in conjunction with a number of journalists and industry experts from across Europe, has been researching the success stories behind the businesswomen operating in the European grocery trade. In that time it compiled a comprehensive shortlist of some 40 names. Chaired by Joanne Denney-Finch, chief executive of the IGD, a judging panel of leading financial analysts, trade journalists and commentators selected the winners.

The winning businesswomen hail from a number of European countries, and represent the largest and most powerful of supermarket groups as well as smaller, forward-thinking chains. Following this gala event, ESM will produce a special commemorative issue highlighting the winners, the companies they work for, and their achievements in the sector. This issue will also focus on how these companies operate at the forefront when it comes to promoting equal opportunities in the workplace.

It is anticipated that this unique event will attract significant exposure from the financial and trade media across Europe, not to mention in the European grocery trade itself.
