Four Out Of Five Employees Did Not Intend To Work In Grocery Industry

Four out of five employees did not plan to work in the grocery industry at the beginning of their careers, according to the results of an IGD survey, revealed on Wednesday 12 June at IGD's Skills Summit.

However, once employees enter the industry, they stay, according to the the research, with 86% of respondents claiming that they expect to remain in the food and grocery sector for the foreseeable future. A further 96% said that they would recommend a career in the industry to young people.

The survey results were unveiled in a speech by IGD chief executive, Joanne Denney-Finch, who encouraged delegates to support 'Feeding Britain’s Future' - Skills for Work Month in September, which seeks to bring food and grocery industries together to deliver pre-employment training for young unemployed people.

Denney-Finch said, “We may not always be the first option for many young people thinking about a career, but we have a huge amount to offer and people recognise this when they step through our doors. We employ over 3.7 million people, we offer a massively diverse range of jobs and people can genuinely progress from the shop or factory floor to the top floor." (13 June)
