Leading supermarket chains in France have signed up to a voluntary agreement to eliminate the majority of the open-door refrigerated cabinets at their stores by 2020. Carrefour, Casino, Auchan, Cora, Francap, Monoprix, Simply Market System and U all agreed to the arrangement.
The deal was signed by the French government and France's Federation of Commercial and distribution (FCD). Doors will be added to 75 per cent of such refrigerated cabinets by 2020. The move is expected to help save 20 per cent of the energy consumed by the stores.
Other supermarkets will be invited to join the scheme with Intermarche expected to sign up within days. (24 Jan)
