General Mills Reduces Sodium In 10 Key Product Categories

General Mills has announced that it has reduced sodium content in all 10 key product categories in the US by 20%.

The food giant has reduced sodium in cereals, dry dinners, frozen pizza, Mexican dinners, refrigerated dough products, savoury snacks, canned vegetables, side dishes, soups, and baking mixes.

It has also improved the nutrient density of its products by increasing elements such as whole grain, fibre, vitamins and minerals across food groups, without compromising on taste, it said.

In 2010, the company pledged to reduce sodium content in 10 key product categories.

'Consumer-Connected'

Senior director of General Mills' innovation, technology and quality team, Tom Hockenberry, said, "We are making clear progress in becoming a more consumer-connected General Mills, as evidenced by our continued work and commitment to sodium reduction.

"As we continue on this journey, we have actively invested – and will continue to do so – in developing the advanced technical solutions that will be required to achieve additional sodium reduction."

The Yoplait maker has also reduced sodium in many other product categories that were not part of its commitment.

These include frozen breakfast products, dessert mixes, grain snacks, and frozen appetisers.
