Lidl is replacing confectionery at tills with fresh fruit during a 10-week healthy till trial to be rolled out in 600 of its UK stores.
One checkout in each participating store will feature Lidl’s fresh fruit and juice and if the trial proves to be a success the healthy tills will become a permanent feature in the Lidl UK store chain.
The Germany-based retailer recently re-branded its fruit and vegetable range, making it more appealing to children under the UK Government’s fruit and vegetable responsibility deal.
It also introduced a food labeling system to feature its own Guideline Daily Amounts (GDA) along with ‘traffic light’ colour coding.
"Lidl is currently working together with the government and other leading supermarkets to establish a consistent approach to nutritional food labeling in order to help consumers in their wish to lead healthier lifestyles," Lidl said.
Lidl currently features own-branded confectionery at its checkouts so brands such as Ferrero, Cadbury, Nestle and Mondelez-International will be unaffected during the trial. (11 Jan)
