Heatwave Boosts UK Grocery Sales

UK grocery sales were boosted significantly by the recent heatwave, according to research agency Nielsen.

The value of sales at British supermarkets jumped 6.4% in the four weeks to 20 July, according to research agency Nielsen. That compares with an increase of 2.3% in the previous four-week period.

Soft drink and alcohol sales accounted for the largest growth segment, followed by frozen food and fresh produce, as temperatures in the UK hit 28 degrees celsius for 17 consecutive days in a row.

Interestingly, the growth rate for the period of reporting was almost twice that achieved by UK supermarkets during the 2012 London Olympics.
