Lidl To Launch Packaging Made From 'Ocean-Bound' Plastics In The UK

Lidl plans to launch recyclable packaging made of plastics collected from beaches and coastlines in South East Asia.

Trade publication packagingeurope.com reported that the new packaging, scheduled to be rolled out in the UK by the end of March, will be used for packing the retailer's fresh fish SKUs.

By the end of the year, Lidl aims to introduce the packaging across its entire fresh fish range and also explore its use for other products, the report said.

The retailer collaborated with packaging companies Copernus, Sharpak, and Bantam Materials to develop the packaging.

The packaging, made of 80% recycled plastic, uses at least 30% 'ocean-bound' plastics, the report added.

The move will help in preventing more than 60 tonnes of plastic - the equivalent of around 2.5 million plastic water bottles - from ending up in the oceans each year.

Last year, Coca-Cola introduced its first batch of plastic bottles made from recovered and recycled marine plastics.
