Italian families' grocery-shopping habits are increasingly beginning to resemble what they were ten years ago, as less money is spent on average per month and less meat is purchased. It reflects the shrinkage that the nation's economy has undergone.
Families in Italy spent on average €2,359 per month on grocery shopping in 2013, which is down 2.5 per cent on 2012, researchers have found. In 2004, the figure stood at €2,381. They are increasingly inclined towards discount stores.
Inflation in Italy was 1.2 per cent last year.
Low-income families and families with two or more children, in particular, have become more frugal. Half of households spend less than €2,000. The median monthly expenditure per household stands at €1,989, a decrease of 4.3 per cent, compared to 2012.
