Italian Grocery Sales Growth Slows, But Increases Seen In October

Italian grocery retail sales in October were lower than the previous month, however, performance was positive when compared with last year.

According to Nielsen data, published by Gdo News, average retail sales were up by 2.1% compared to October 2016.

Sales in the supermarket and superstore retail segment increased by 3.7%, however, the hypermarket channel recorded a 3.5% drop in the same period.

The smaller retail formats, such as supermarkets, have been experiencing a positive growth trend since May of this year.

Elsewhere, sales growth was seen at independent retailers (+1.3%) and discounters (+2.2%), which have been the fastest growing retail channels in Italy this year.
