Portuguese grocery retail group Jerónimo Martins is expecting 10 per cent average annual sales growth over the next three years driven by its Polish and Colombian ventures.
The company will inject €2.5 billion in its operations, with plans to expand its Polish Biedronka store network by 50 per cent to 3,000, and open five new distribution centres in the country by 2015. The Biedronka banner, the largest supermarket chain in Poland, accounts for 60 per cent of annual turnover for Jerónimo Martins.
The Portugal-based retailer will also enter the Colombian market in the New Year, investing €400 million in the roll-out of a minimum of 150 stores by 2015. After an unsuccessful attempt to break the Brazilian market ten years ago, the retailer sees growth potential and little competition in Columbia’s modern retail sector. (14 Dec)
