Leclerc And Système U To Sell Fuel At Cost Price

French retailers Leclerc and Système U have said that they will sell petrol and diesel at cost price for the month of September. Prices will be reduced the price by two or three cents a litre at all of the chains' fuel forecourts and Leclerc chairman Michel-Edouard Leclerc said yesterday that the group "won’t be making any profit."

Leclerc described the move as a "political signal" and said that it will add to the French government's efforts to curb the cost of petrol and diesel in the country. French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault has said there will be a “modest” and “temporary” decrease in fuel tax.

E.Leclerc currently operates 546 fuel stations in France, with a 12 percent share of the retail fuel market, according to the company. (28 Aug)
