'Lidl Lebensräume' Bee Preservation Project Earns UN Recognition

Lidl Germany has announced that its 'Lidl Lebensräume' project, which seeks to preserve the natural habitat of wild bees and promote biodiversity, has been acknowledged by the United Nations.

Lidl Lebensräume is now an official project of the UN Decade of Biodiversity, a series of projects that contribute to biodiversity through the introduction of specific measures.

On The Right Track

"We are delighted that our Lidl Lebensräume initiative is now an official project of the UN Decade of Biodiversity, which shows that we are on the right track with our efforts to protect wild bees," said Anita Wälz, managing director, corporate communications, at Lidl Germany. "We have expanded the food supply and nesting possibilities for insects with flowering areas and bee-friendly plants in our stores."

Since the launch of the project in January of last year, Lidl has introduced 'flower fields' at several of its logistics centres, with more than 2.1 million square metres of natural flowering areas developed.

In addition, the retailer has expanded the range of plants on sale in its stores that are bee-friendly, as well as work alongside its suppliers on bee conservation methods.
