Lidl Named Grocer of the Year For First Time

Lidl has taken out the title of Grocer of the Year in the UK for the first time, seeing off rivals such as Waitrose and Aldi to land the accolade at the Grocer Gold Awards.

The fast-growing budget chain has - alongside Aldi - spearheaded a major shake-up of the supermarket industry in the UK over the past 12c months, igniting a price war among the more established big four supermarket brands.

Lidl has made a significant effort to target middle and higher income shoppers with its Deluxe range of own-label food, quality wine and spirits.

Lidl UK chief executive Ronny Gottschlich said, "This is an incredible achievement and a great reward for all of the hard work put in by all Lidl UK teams over the past year.

"More and more people are coming to Lidl for their full supermarket shop, with old preconceptions continuing to change all the time. This award helps to reinforce the growing trust and loyalty that the British public have in us."
