German discount grocers Lidl plans to open 66 stores by the end of 2012 in Romania, according to local media in Bucharest. “We want to reach around 200 stores this year in Romania,” said Lidl Romania sales manager Alin Trnobranschy.
“Each unit has an area of between 900 and 1,200 square metres, while the investment, excluding the land plot, exceeds 1.0 million euro [$1.3 million],” he added. Mr Trnobranschy made the announcement to news agency Mediafax, said the financial daily Ziarul Financiar (www.zf.ro). Lidl currently has over 2,000 employees in Romania.
Lidl is part of Lidl & Schwartz group, which also owns the Kaufland stores in Romania. (6 Feb).
