Online Grocery Shopping Grows In Portugal In 2018: Study

The percentage of Portuguese shoppers engaging in online shopping rose to 16% last year, up from 9% in 2017, new data has revealed.

According to the latest Observatory Shopping Experience report from in-Store Media, shoppers' primary reasons for choosing this medium include delivery services, punctuality, and offers and promotions.

Respondents also cited easy and intuitive shopping processes and the availability of fresh products as other deciding factors.

Store Format

Among those that don't shop online, hypermarkets emerged as the preferred store format, according to 86% of respondents.

Close to two thirds of respondents (64%) said that they preferred shopping at supermarkets, while neighbourhood grocery stores was the preferred channel for 27% of respondents.

Some 8% said that they preferred to shop at organic outlets.

Other Findings

The study also found that 74% of consumers usually shop from more than one banner, purchasing from three supermarkets on an average.

Price was found to be a key factor for 66% of the respondents when choosing supermarkets and hypermarkets, followed by store comfort and experience (63%), the variety of the offer (51%), and social responsibility (39%).

The study also found that 63% of shoppers are seeking to eat more healthily.

In addition, 69% of those polled claimed they considered the ingredients, composition, and origin of products before purchasing, the study found.
