More than 560,000 consumers in Portugal have registered so far to take part in an initiative, launched by consumers association Deco, to benefit from lower prices on a basket of 35 products.
Initially, Deco planned to organise an auction to choose the supermarket operator with the best discount on a suite of essential products (including milk, pasta, meat, rice and fruit).
However, the association has now announced it intends to negotiate directly with the retailers by the end of June. According to Deco, no supermarket was able to all the requirements, so it was not possible to "meet the conditions for completing the challenge".
All consumers that register with Deco will get a Deco+ card, free of charge, entitling them to benefit from the discounts during one year.
