Pingo Doce and Intermarché Take Over 10 Alisuper Stores

Pingo Doce and Intermarché have expanded their presence in Portugal’s Algarve region by taking over stores previously operated by Alisuper.

A company source told daily Diario Economico that Pingo Doce is currently adapting three stores – in Caliços (Albufeira), Quinta do Lago and Vale de Lobo – and that they will open during the first half of July. With the three new stores, Pingo Doce will operate a total of 25 stores in the Algarve.

In May, Intermarché (Les Mousquetaires Group) signed a contract for the acquisition of nine Alisuper stores. According to CEO Carlos Almeida, Portugal’s Competition Authority (AdC) has already authorized the purchase of seven stores, but not for those in Rogil and Sagres, whose acquisition would put Intermarché in a competitive advantage.

For his part, the owner of the Nogueira Group, José Nogueira, confirmed that the company will continue operations of 41 of the 50 existing Alisuper stores, adding that there are plans to expand the sales network in the north and Lisbon.
