Sainsbury’s Plans Additional Netto Supermarket Openings

As well as the 15 Netto supermarkets that will all be trading by the end of March, Sainsbury’s is to build between 10 and 12 additional outlets of its discount division on the back of strong Christmas trading, theguardian.com reports.

The retailer hopes their presence will wrangle back a degree of market share from Lidl and Aldi.

The first of the new supermarkets to open their doors will be, respectively, located in Doncaster, which begins business this week; and in Hull, which will open next week.

Sainsbury’s has submitted the paperwork for planning permission to construct Netto stores in Garston (outside Liverpool), Penketh (outside Warrington), Cleckheaton (outside Bradford), and Warsop (outside Mansfield).

Furthermore, four or five Netto supermarkets will be constructed in Hull over the next number of years, Sainsbury’s says.

A spokesperson for the chain said, “Netto is on track to open 15 stores by the end of this financial year. No decision has been made on future openings, however we continue to review potential opportunities. It’s early days but we are learning a lot about the important discount market and customers are responding well.”
