Target Names Former Clorox, Safeway CEOs to Board of Directors

Target named former chief executive officers of Clorox and Safeway to its board as the retailer pushes further into groceries and home products.

Donald Knauss, 64, served as CEO of Clorox from 2006 to 2014 and was previously chief operating officer for Coca-Cola North America. Robert Edwards, 60, stepped down as head of Safeway in April after two years running the company. Their appointments are effective immediately, Minneapolis-based Target said in a statement.

Target has been focusing on its grocery and food business as part of a broader vision of making the retailer a leader in wellness. Revamping the food aisles, which won’t happen until 2016, also will include adding more items popular with younger consumers, like craft beer and yogurt.

“Don has a lengthy track record of driving the strategic growth of prominent, consumer brands at global companies,” Target CEO Brian Cornell said in a statement. “Robert has held leadership positions in the grocery industry for more than a decade and will offer a fresh perspective on our food reinvention.”
