Tesco Hungary Facing Online-Division Strike Over Pay Increases

Tesco’s online division in Hungary is threatening to go on strike in March if all of its workers don’t get pay rises, local newspaper Magyar Idők has reported.

According to the newspaper, because of the rapid rise in popularity of its WebShop in the area, Tesco reportedly said that it would increase pay for its online-order delivery personnel in Central Europe by as much as 14 per cent.

However, Tesco Hungary has only confirmed plans to increase pay for delivery staff in Budapest and Győr, where the majority of its deliveries take place.

Chairman of Hungary’s Trade Union of Independent Workers reportedly told Magyar Idők that, "Tesco believes that in those cities the workers don’t have an incentive to quit the company because they don’t have better job options elsewhere."

Revenue for Tesco Hungary’s fiscal year, which ends in February, is reportedly expected to be around HUF 9 billion, up 10-15 per cent, with 80 per cent of the retailer’s online sales taking place in Budapest.
