UK grocer Tesco has announced plans to cut 34 roles from its non-food department as a response to "difficult economic times". Tesco recently revealed a 0.5 per cent drop in underlying sales in the UK following a drop in non-food demand; it was the supermarket's first like-for-like sales decline in twenty years.
"In these difficult economic times we have reviewed a number of office roles to ensure that we are working as efficiently as possible on the things that we know will make a difference for our customers," Tesco said in a statement. "Following this review there will be a small number of redundancies, subject to consultation. We recognise the impact of this and where possible we will work with those affected to find an alternative role within the business."
Tesco's £500 million Big Price Drop campaign was launched last month; the retailer will end its double Clubcard points offer to help cover the costs of the initiative. (24 Oct)
