Tesco Tackles Diabetes

Research by Diabetes UK, which was funded in part by Tesco, has revealed that more than 700 people in the UK are diagnosed with diabetes each day (280,000 per annum).

Barbara Young, chief executive of Diabetes UK, stated, "It is deeply worrying that more than 700 people a day are being diagnosed with diabetes, and this clearly shows the frightening scale of what is fast becoming a national health emergency. If we continue to see people being diagnosed at this rate, then the consequences will be disastrous."

Greg Sage, who is Tesco's community director, said, "Diabetes is a growing and urgent health threat that needs immediate action. We've raised over £12 million so far through our sponsorship with Diabetes UK, and today's announcement means there will be more support for the millions of people living with diabetes from our colleagues and customers."

Sage also mentioned that Tesco is endeavouring to diminish the possibility of developing type 2 diabetes by removing billions of calories from its products, and by getting rid of sugar-heavy items from its checkouts.
