Toom Baumarkt To Introduce Reusable Plant Pallets

Germany's Rewe Group has announced that Toom Baumarkt will introduce reusable plant pallets for transporting plants from producers to warehouses and supermarkets.

The new Floritray reusable pallets will eliminate plastic waste produced during the packaging of disposable plants.

The pallets will be cleaned and returned to the gardeners from its warehouse in Bottrop after the plants are delivered to Toom outlets.

The trial of the new reusable pallets, made of recycled plastic, is expected to commence at the beginning of 2020.

Exploring Options

Disposable plant range represents a large source of plastic waste, and the move will enable the retailer to explore options that can remove packaging in the plant sector.

Every year, around 8 million plant pallets are used by Toom to bring plants from the nurseries to warehouses and supermarkets.

The new reusable system has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by around 30%, Rewe said in its statement.
