The UK budget chain Poundworld is planning a massive expansion of its grocery range over the next three months. The high-street retailer will also offer a limited selection of alcohol including cans of beer and cider for under £1 each.
“We are creating an offer that can supply a decent food shopping basket for a customer coming into Poundworld,” said Rob Ashton, head of the grocery buying division at Poundworld. “We are starting with canned goods, pasta sauces, eggs and bread.” Poundworld plans to introduce a core chilled offering with items such as cheese, sausages and bacon, as well as a core frozen offer. “We are also looking at a food-to-go range and selling alcohol although it will be quite a limited range like cans of beer and cider. I am not sure we will be doing bottles of wine for a pound.” Poundworld, a rival to 99p Stores and Poundland, announced growth 60 per cent up year-on-year recently. Poundworld has 80 stores in the UK. (6 July)
