UK Supermarkets Reveal Price Plans For New Year

The UK’s leading supermarkets have revealed their pricing plans for spring 2012. Tesco reduced the prices of 350 of its products on December 29; the items were reduced by approximately 15 per cent.“Big Price Drop is a rolling campaign to help customers save more money everyday at Tesco on the essentials they need the most,” said Richard Brasher, CEO of Tesco UK.

Morrisons has introduced a saver stamps system; customers will receive with a £1 stamp for spending £49 in store; an additional two £1 stamps is on offer when shoppers spend £98. The grocer will also provide free shopping for more than 2,000 people – or five customers at each store - each day.  The Great British Price Crunch will continue throughout the month of January. “Our Great British Price Crunch effectively makes the weekly shopping budget stretch further, helping families to afford everyday essentials,” said Richard Hodgson, Group Commercial Director at Morrisons.  “The launch of our Free Shopping gives customers the opportunity to win something which will help with their finances as well as providing some excitement during a month which can be tough.

Sainsbury’s will continue with its Brand Match initiative, which was launched in October; the strategy rewards customers with coupons should they find items cheaper at Asda or Tesco. (3 Jan)
