Waitrose Launches First Premium Indian Wine In The UK

UK retailer Waitrose & Partners has introduced what it says is the first premium Indian wine to be available in the UK.

The wine comes from the Vallonné Vineyards, India’s first boutique winery and vineyard, and the launch is a UK exclusive, according to the retailer.

Increased Demand

The upmarket grocer registered a 91% increase in demand for wine from lesser-known countries across its stores last year, it said.

The Vallonné vineyard rests on the slopes of the Sahyadri mountain range, near Mukhne Lake and overlooking the Kavnai peak, where it produces premium French-style wines.

The product that has hit shelves in Waitrose is the Vallonné Vineyards Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon from 2016, priced at £19.99.

It features aromas of spices and blackberry balanced with oak, with a  full, round mouthfeel delivering an integrated finish, according to the retailer. The wine can be paired with big, rich flavours such as roast lamb, barbecue, or a spicy biryani.

Xenia Ruscombe-King MW, wine buyer, Waitrose, said the group "has seen wines from more unusual countries becoming very popular with our customers, especially when they offer great quality."

Ruscombe-King  believes the untraditional countries are producing wine "to rival those from classic wine-making countries."
