The Rewe Group, which operates Billa, Bipa, Penny, Merkur and Sutterlüty outlets in Austria, has overtaken Spar as the Number One retailer in the Austrian market, according to research by RegioData. Spar, which has its headquarters in Austria, operates the Spar, Interspar, Eurospar, Maximarkt, and Hervis stores in the country.
Regiodata's research also found that Austria's retail sector is dominated by a few companies, with the ten largest companies boasting 5.5 million square metres of retail space between them.
37 per cent of stores in Austria are chain stores, with the highest proportion of chain stores found in the food, hardware and pharmacy sectors respectively. (7 Sept)
