REWE To Pilot Test Sales Of Loose Organic Fruit And Vegetables

German retail group REWE has announced a pilot project that will see organic fruit and vegetables sold without plastic packaging.

In April of this year, the project will be launched in around 600 REWE stores in Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, and the Saarland.

The retailer will eliminate plastic packaging for most fruit and vegetables, or replace them with environmentally-friendly alternatives.

The move is expected to save around 90,000 kilograms of packaging material per year, including 55,000 kilograms of plastic.

The Pilot Project

Around 107 fruit and vegetable varieties with greener labelling and packaging solutions will be included in the pilot test.

The retailer will then evaluate the impact of these measures on the freshness and shelf life of the products, practicality, and customer acceptance.

Based on this outcome, REWE will take further steps to introduce better packaging solutions.

Earlier, the retailer removed plastic film packaging from organic cucumbers.
